Welcome to Maverick Mushroom: The Field Guide to Psilocybin
Every field has a moment when the interest arrives before the map does. Psilocybin is having that moment now. University research centres study it full-time. Retreats host guests on three continents. Clinics, facilitators, educators, and brands are building in the open — and the people curious about all of it are left piecing together the landscape from forum threads and outdated lists.
Maverick Mushroom is the map.
What the guide covers
The directory answers three questions, and only those three:
- Where are the businesses? Dispensaries, retreats, clinics, facilitators, education programs, and brands, worldwide. Every entry is reviewed by a real person before it goes live.
- What do they offer? Each listing carries the essentials — what the business does, where it is, how to reach it, and what visitors say.
- What are the mushrooms themselves? The Species Library holds reference plates for wild Psilocybe species and cultivated varieties: field marks, habitat, and lookalikes, drawn the way the classic field guides did it.
We do not sell anything. There is no cart, no checkout, no ordering. Maverick Mushroom is a reference — a billboard for a field that never had one.
Why a directory, and why now
Interest in psilocybin has moved from the margins to the mainstream. Dedicated research centres at Johns Hopkins and Imperial College London opened in 2019 and have published steadily since. Surveys show millions of adults are curious about what the research means for wellbeing, focus, and creativity. Retreats and clinics report waiting lists.
What has not kept up is the information layer. Guides go stale within a year. Aggregator lists include businesses that closed long ago — when we seeded our Vancouver section, we found several "current" guides listing storefronts that had been shut for two years. So we made re-verification the core of the product: a listing here means a person checked it, recently.
How to use the guide
Start with what you are looking for. If it is a place, browse by category or search by city. If it is a mushroom, start at the Species Library — every entry carries its field marks and its lookalikes side by side. If it is understanding, The Journal (you are reading it) publishes field notes on the research, the species, and the people building this industry.
And if you run a business in this space: listing is free. A real person reviews every submission, most within two days.
