Psilocybe cubensis

aka PE

The most distinctive and most mythologized cubensis line. The popular origin story credits Terence McKenna with collecting spores in the Colombian Amazon in the early 1970s, later cultivated by physician Steven Pollock, from which a grower isolated a stable mutant with swollen stems and undeveloped caps. Much of that narrative traces to a 2009 magazine article whose author later said he had been fed embellished details — so treat the story as folklore layered over a real underlying mutant line.

Lookalikes — read this twice

Its low spore output makes verified prints hard to obtain, so a great deal of material sold as PE is actually unrelated genetics or early-generation hybrids — Tidal Wave, PEQ, Trans Envy — trading on the name. Because true PE often cannot be confirmed by spore print, mislabelling is the norm rather than the exception.

Deadly species grow in the same places as psilocybin ones and can resemble them closely. Never eat a wild mushroom identified from a website — including this one.
